Microplastics Research Group is a group that has been researching microplastic pollution in Turkish seas and lakes since it was founded in 2016 by Dr. Sedat Gündoğdu and Dr. Cem Çevik. The main purpose of the group is to reveal the current situation of plastic pollution in marine and freshwater ecosystems and its effect on the organisms, and to provide science-based data to decision makers and to conduct social awareness studies in the light of the results obtained.
In this context, Mikrobeach supported by TÜBİTAK, Plasturtle supported by RUFFORD Foundation and Microlevant projects supported by Çukurova University have been completed. The group also makes collaborations with GAIA to investigate the effects of plastic waste trade. The group continues its researches with projects investigating the source, distribution and effects of plastics, especially microplastics, on the ecosystem.
